Daylight Without the Afternoon Heat
Most people want more light in their kitchen, and in Riverside most people also want less heat. Those two wishes pull against each other through the same piece of glass. Planning the kitchen window well is how you get both, and a remodel is the cheapest time to do it, because the wall is already open and the cabinets have not been hung.
Start With Which Way the Window Faces
A north facing window gives soft, even light all day and almost no direct sun. An east window brings bright morning light that is gone before the heat builds. A south window takes sun in winter and, with a decent eave, very little in summer when the sun is high. A west window is the difficult one. The sun comes in low and hot in the late afternoon, straight under the eaves, right when the kitchen is busiest.
So before we talk about glass, we stand in your kitchen in the late afternoon and watch where the light lands. It often falls across the sink run, the counter where people prep, or the cooktop itself.
Reading the Label on the Glass
Windows sold in the United States usually carry a rating label with a few numbers on it. The one that matters most for a hot kitchen is the solar heat gain coefficient. It runs from zero to one, and a lower number means less of the sun’s heat comes through. Visible transmittance tells you how much light gets through. U-factor describes how well the window insulates.
Low e coatings are what make the difference. A good spectrally selective low e glass can keep the solar heat gain low while letting through a surprising amount of visible light, so the room stays bright but the heat stays outside. California’s energy code sets requirements for new windows, and the permit set shows how the unit you choose complies.
Size and Position
A bigger window over the sink looks lovely on a mood board. On a west wall it can make the kitchen unusable for three hours a day. Sometimes the better plan is a wider but shorter window with its sill above the backsplash, or a pair of smaller windows, or moving most of the glass to a north or east wall and keeping a modest opening facing west.
In older Riverside homes a window that gets larger needs a properly sized header over it, and in a load bearing wall that may mean an engineer. In a designated historic district, a change to a window visible from the street may need design review before a permit is issued. We plan for both.
Shade Outside Beats Blinds Inside
Once sunlight has passed through the glass, most of its heat is already in the room, even if a blind stops the glare. Exterior shade stops it before it gets there. A properly sized awning, a patio cover, exterior solar screens or a deciduous tree on the west side can do more for a hot kitchen than anything behind the glass. We will say so when that is the right answer, even though it is not work we sell.
Light for After the Blinds Come Down
Plenty of west facing kitchens spend summer evenings with the shades drawn, which means the lighting plan has to carry the room. We plan layered light: recessed or surface fixtures for general light, continuous LED under cabinet strips for the counters, and a fixture over the sink or island. LED fixtures also add very little heat compared to older halogen lights, which matters in a room you are trying to cool.
